Glyn Berry Memorial Scholarship
On January 15, 2006, senior Canadian diplomat Glyn Berry was tragically killed in a terrorist attack in Afghanistan. At that time, he was the Political Director for the Provincial Reconstruction Team in Kandahar with the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada (DFAIT, now Global Affairs Canada).
Glyn's death shocked the Foreign Service, and most of Global Affairs attended his funeral in Ottawa. After his death, the Treasury Board of Canada offered Canadian public servants serving in war zones particular danger pay for officers posted to Afghanistan and Iraq. After discovering that our regular life insurance did not cover conflict zones, Global Affairs Canada also instituted a certain accidental death and dismemberment (ADD) insurance policy. Glyn was a principled humanitarian, passionately devoted to improving conditions for ordinary people in desperate circumstances. He graduated with a Ph.D. (Political Science) from Dalhousie University in 1981. In his honour, in partnership with GAC, Dalhousie created the Glyn R. Berry Memorial Scholarship in International Policy Studies. CSSD co-sponsors an annual lecture series in Glyn Berry’s memory with the POLI department to encourage informed reflection on Canadian foreign policy. |
