Charitable art donations

Over the years I have made charitable and cultural property donations to a number of Canadian art galleries and museums. It is with great pleasure that I can look back and take pride in these charitable donations. Please take some time to visit these  institutions and consider supporting Canadian arts and culture.  In particular, family art donations over the years to Western University in my home town of London, Ontario, has granted me membership on the university's prestigious donor list of its 1876 Societies.

Institution: Western University
Donation:  Nur art work by my mother, Canadian visual artist Jamelie Hassan donated to Western Libraries in memory of my grandparents Ayshi and Alex Hassan. The work depicts what is known as the Verse of Light from the Qur’an. The donated artwork is a reproduction of an intricate work of calligraphy, forming a circle across four panels on the ceiling of the library at the Great Mosque of Xi’an in China. The four-panel piece was installed near the Archives and Research Collections Centre at Weldon.

Jamelie Hassan, Canadian, b. 1948, Light Upon Light (in memory of Emina Hadzic Hassan), 1997, Watercolour on paper 46 x 61 cm
Year of Donation: 2016
Institution: Woodstock Art Gallery, Woodstock, Ontario
Donation: Watercolour Light Upon Light (in memory of Emina Hadzic Hassan), May 20, 1997 , by my mother, Canadian visual artist, Jamelie Hassan.

This watercolour was painted in memory of my cousin Ali's wife Emina who passed away in May of 1997. The title of the work comes from the 35th verse of the 24th Sura of the Koran, known as the "Verse of Light." Plants, oriental tiles, ceramics and lanterns are common motifs in Hassan's work. Often she links these personal objects to broader, political concerns but here the objects create a more personal statement. The juxtaposition of the plant and tiles in her studio space spoke to Hassan as she mourned the loss of her niece and the act of painting these objects became a way of expressing her grief.

The work is currently on exhibit from until January 23, 2021, at the Woodstock Art Gallery: Dance Me to the End of Love: A Virtual Exhibition

Canada is situated on the traditional territory of First Nation, Inuit and Métis peoples from coast to coast to coast.

I was born in London, Ontario, which is on the traditional lands of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee, Lenape, Attawandaron and Huron-Wendat peoples, at the forks of Deshkan Ziibi (Antler River), an area subject to the Dish with One Spoon Wampum and other treaties.
